Discussion with my Co-worker

My co worker and I are discussing the issues of the gangs out in Long Island. The first gang that comes to mind is MS-13 just because we see many of them walking around the mall in which we work. I asked her where it originated. Some people say it originated in El Salvador and some say Guatemala. I really don't know, but it's very nerve racking. Noam Chomsky's globalization video mentioned how Clinton prevented or minimized globalization with his "gate keeper" approach. I don't remember hearing many stories about the MS-13 gang until I moved out to Long Island nearly 5 yrs ago. Now it seems that we have more and more adolescents joining this gang and they are American. They aren't from foreign countries. Their roots might be, but a lot are born here. How is Globalization positive in this aspect? People moving and coming in from everywhere, we just have not control over who sets foot in American soil.

We all heard about a shooting around last June in Timberline park in Brentwood. It just so happens that the stray bullet that hit that 13 yr old child is the son of a regular customer at my workplace. The kid was in the hospital for a month and a half and he is now on a wheel chair and lost sight from his left eye. He was very lucky. Doctors told my customer that they do not know how his son is alive. Apparently, he got hit by a stray bullet during a gang initiation ritual of some kids wanting to join the MS-13 gang. A couple of months later, a 35 yr old man was found dismembered and it was linked to a gang initiation ritual of the same gang. It just so happens that they caught the 3 men involved in the crime. When I looked at the channel 12 news (thank god for optimum cable), and saw the faces of the guilty men, I realized that the 4'-10" man, was the same guy who had taken my order in one of the food establishments at the mall I work in. I was sooooo scared to go to work. The thought of it just made my stomach knot. The man was a father and god knows how many children he left behind. To make matters worse, this gang initiation ritual was a result of the failed gang ritual in June of 2009 (you know the one in which the 13 yr old kid just lost his eyesight and ability to walk), so since they didn't kill their target initially they had to make sure death was really going to happen this time. Of course the perpetrators are all in jail, probably and I hope doing life in prison, but how do we keep this from happening? Is globalization, in terms of giving access to everyone, a bad thing? I would say in this aspect yes. How can this be stopped? I don't want it minimized. Just stopped. Do we really have to close our borders, or can the US come up with a legitimate way of making sure that it opens his doors to people who believe in improving life and believe that the future of our generation lies in what we are willing to do for the success of this generation.
