The Unknown

So what's with the world's fascination with the undead? It's not a new occurrence. Today we have True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. Ten years ago we had Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Ten years before that was Interview with a Vampire. You get my drift. Ever since Bela Lugosi played Dracula, the world of film has been obsessed with vampires.

I can't say that I'm not on board. I watched Buffy when I was younger and I watch True Blood now, but it's gotten me thinking: what's this obsession all about? I think the most obvious is the mystery of it all. We know vampires don't exist, but the fact that there is a possibility of otherworldly beings on earth has always caused a bit of an uproar. In addition to their intrigue, they're hot. Have there been too many ugly vampires on the screen lately? I didn't think so.

People love the idea of the unknown and living on the edge. With these badass creatures, it's all of that rolled up into one. It goes against everything we have ever been taught--fraternizing with something that could potentially kill us in a heartbeat. If vampires actually existed, I doubt too many people would be caught alone at night, much less willingly forming a relationship. We value our lives too much, but fantasizing about them? That's another story entirely. I doubt we'll see shortage of otherworldly creatures in years to come.
