If you've ever read the book Rich Dad, Poor dad, this will all sound extremely familiar. Despite being brothers, my father and uncle have very contrasting perspectives when it comes to certain things. My father for example, is comfortable at a stable job, and going to work everyday --my uncle on the other hand, always attempts to create some kind of business (despite having a stable job as a teacher) and consequently takes on various business risks. My father has always criticized him for that and often complains that hes throwing his money away. My uncle has had more failures than successes, however, his successes more than outshine his failures in my opinion, as there are two businesses that were start ups in the late 80's that are still functioning today (one of which was a cab company which he later sold to a larger cab company).
Working a 9-5 for 40-50 years and getting a few plaques as a "token of appreciation" for years of your dedicated service is a nightmare to me. I love IT, software development, and technology in general, don't misunderstand, but I feel everyone (or at least everyone whos creative) should aim to start their own company of some sort --preferably in a strong area of interest, for example, a 5star chef may have plans to open his/her own restaurant, or a physical therapist may save up money to open his/her own therapy clinic. At least start something part-time at first, while having a decent paying job, and eventually quit when your *real job* starts making a substantial amount of money --enough to be sure you don't need to work to sustain yourself.
I have quite a few things I want to work on in the areas of Real Estate, Entertainment, and last but certainly not least, Computers and technology; and I will go into a bit more detail about them in a later blog entry.
