The World Cup

I have been a soccer player and fan since I was 5 years old. Throughout my childhood it consumed my life. I remember 4 years ago how excited I was for the World Cup and how I would never miss a game. Even at work I would find a way to escape to a TV. The tournament is unbelievable to see how much other countries live and breathe soccer.

Yesterday I was watching the Italy vs. Paraguay soccer game with my boyfriend, the most Italian guy you'll ever meet. While I was sitting there explaining certain rules of the game to him, I stopped and thought about how the World Cup is not for soccer fans but rather supporters of their nationalities.

Even on Facebook, people constantly have status updates about the games and I know damn well , they have never watched a soccer game prior to this. I guess its frustrating because everybody gives soccer a bad rap in the United States and it is probably one of the least popular sports over here. Golf is more watched..... I'm still trying to figure out how.

I wish people would appreciate the game rather than pick a country to root for. I'm watching the Portugal game right now and it's because I love the game, not because I want to put the score on facebook later as a conversation starter.
