So June 8th, 2010 brought us the release of the much anticipated next chapter in the Lady Gaga chronicles, Alejandro. In true Gaga form it is a spectacle, and at over eight and a half minutes it is another epic music video. On Larry King Live, Lady Gaga said she tries to "push limits and push boundaries" pulling reference from Marina Abramovic a performance artist, who implies "we create our own limits." Well in this video Lady Gaga is truly setting her own limits and pushed boundaries of society in similar ways Madonna did in the 80's. The video portrays a sort of homoerotic militia which she leads, and is powerful to the extent of using sex and scandal to exclaim point of view. The video is compelling to watch because it's created by an artist not only a musician. The video has multiple levels to the story being told surrounding critical current events, and the ending scene depicts a struggle between a mob like crowd in a fight sequence with a religious figure. The last shot is that same religious figure on a bed most likely dead and then the shot bubbles like an overexposed developed picture in under a heat source. I think one of the most significant pieces of the last scene is the bed the figure is lying on. You can see strings on the bed and the figure and the other person in the scene. There are many ideas that come to my mind as to what the meaning is to this. None of them include attacking the church or being disrespectful in any way. Also in the Larry King Special we get a little insight into Lady Gaga's soul and find out that she is religious. I believe it's meant to be a drastic role reversal on society in the sense to get a point across about tolerance, acceptance, and equality, rights that are supposed to be inalienable and undeniable for all, not subject to debate or denial. Watch below and see what you think.
