Scopophilia is an interesting concept in human nature. And I don't mean just looking at sexual acts or objects, I mean the general love of looking at people, with or without their knowledge. We like to observe people. How they act, dress, present themselves are all very important parts of our nature. For example, why do people observe the person they are attracted to? Why do they feel the need to look at them and note every action and gesture? I think it is because we as a culture take great pleasure in making observations about other people. How do we tell that we know someone? We know all their quirks, the way they like to do things.
I think that during our performances in front of Staller there was a lot of scopophilia going around. A lot of people stopped to look at what we were doing, made weird faces, showing they were analyzing our actions. Even my roommate came with her boyfriend and was observing with great curiosity. My conclusion is, despite our love of privacy and secrecy, all of us are just a little scopophilic. We all have a little of voyeurism in us.
