I work at a discount card store over in Commack. It's not terribly hard work, nor is it incredibly strict. However, there seem to be certain universals (i.e. customers) that make even the simplest job hellish from time to time.
Now I know that there are plenty out there who don't treat the people in retail like slaves. And I know that everyone's entitled to their bad day and whatever. I'm sure anyone who has a retail / customer service oriented job would agree there there is just this 10% of awful people that make the six to eight hour shift last forever.
Be that as it may, next time you go out to somewhere, remember these few tips to stay out of that 10% and keep the workers from bitching about you later that night or in the break room.
-Please use common sense.
-Read the signs. They are posted for a reason.
-We know what we're doing. Trust us.
-Do not yell. It makes us flustered and angry and we will blow you off if you keep bitching.
-Turn. Off. The. Cellphone.
-Yes I do work here. That's why I'm behind the counter or holding the armloads of merchandise.
-We are paid to be nice to you. It will be more sincere if you return the favor.
-Please be polite - even just a thank you as you're leaving makes us feel human again.
Thank you for understanding. Us retail slaves appreciate it.
