Media as a Lifestyle

According to readings assigned by Professor Baldwin media plays a very important factor in determining our lifestyle. Different ideas for buildings, landscapes, and cities are brought to the public by different forms of media. One comes up with creative images using his/her vivid imagination and these unimaginable yet possible ideas are introduced to the world. How has this changed our life? Well let’s think about it, every invention was first created in someone’s mind and then made sense on paper in 2D graphics. Today however these papers are replaced with computer and touch screens and in the future everything can be replaced with holograms. We are using the technology that people 2000 years ago might have looked upon as impossible therefore we say from their point of view, we are living the “unlivable”. However, who is to say that things may not further develop from today. Media is used as a form of art and people with very imaginative minds use their talent to create the unthinkable. These creations shape the ways of how people live and therefore their lifestyle.

A quick video of me driving around campus during the snow storm.

Thanks to Radu for driving me around :)

Midterm5

For midterm, we used projector and stretch clothes to show up to wall what we did in our class.
Actually, I could not stay whole time, but I had a great time in there.
The midterm was cool because I felt it was collaboration between technology and nature. It was my first experience doing that kind of thing by using projector, so the project made me impressive.

When I was in there, we were waiting for sunset, so actually we couldn't use sunlight. But through the fabric, we could see our Sketch Up, texture of time, and Michelangelo moving. These were really interesting!!
I enjoyed it!!!

Modernization-VIRTUAL INTERPRETATION

I read through some more of the lectures that the professor gave us through the flash drive and found a folder on modernization. It's been mentioned in our class times directly and indirectly. I read about how a lot of the western civilizations modernized while other countries became third world countries and are just on the verge of beginning to modernize. The mass media had a large part in the process of modernizing. Cultural diffusion led to a general acceptance of society's norms. Modernization led to people who live across the oceans to speak to each other and to video chat with them so they can look at them live. It's amazing how two people who have never met can even come in contact through internet social sites. Two different cultures become one through this theory of modernization. I can only wonder what tomorrow has in store for us.

Spring Break

I thought spring break was a time to relax, take a break from all schoolwork, and just have fun. Boy, was I wrong. I have two books to read (more for my research paper), an 8-10 page paper due when I get back from spring break, another set of weekly questions due by Wednesday.. I'm probably forgetting more. I just want to take time to relax from all of the stress I've dealt with before spring break thanks to midterms and whatnot. I want summer to come quickly, but I'm probably taking summer classes to fulfill requirements for my major so I can't even look forward to no classes then.

Professor

Just thought the professor should be a part of this blog so I put his photo up from the day we all went out to see Matt and his friend do some flips. (which by the way were amazing!!) I used GIMP on this as you can see!

Another eye candy with music. The sandbox was uploaded to sketch up and I added some shapes into it, as well as music. I made about 7-8 different songs through the mixcraft program and it was actually kind of fun.

Medicine has come a long way.-VIRTUAL INTERPRETATION

I read through some of the documents that the professor gave to us on our flash drive. I read into Italian and Greek medicine and found it quite interesting. Surgery, pathology, bone fractures, hygiene was all a part of medicine studies among the Greeks like Hippocrates. They wrote about the smallest details about our body and how it works. Medicine was a part of the medieval world way back then and has probably given vital information to doctors and scientists of today. Even woman of the middle ages were involved in practice. They were the midwives who helped in the birth of babies. Everything seems to have gotten more complicated to me today. The facts from this folder are amazing to me because even though I already learned about such facts before, it refreshes my mind on these topics and it's always good when that happens. The pictures of all the plants used for medicine shows a little of they used natural products and how a lot of medicines today aren't like that anymore. Medicine has definetely come a long way since the middle ages period.

I used Youtube and put all my videos up there because when I added my own music, blogger wouldn't let me upload for some reason.

College Campus and Safety

Stony Brook University has a very diverse campus full of all kinds of people from all over the world. Students are from different parts of the United States and countries. We have a lot of smart international students who make our college community even better. In the sense of geography, I feel it was all thought out pretty well. Location and and the placement of every building was thought out well. The library is right in the center of the campus. There are buildings all around it. The SAC, which is the main place for food is right by it. Students can walk within a minute to go get food. It's all very close by and convenient. The dorm buildings surround the main campus so the walking distance isn't so bad. Although some have to walk further because of where they live. I understand why the campus looks blurry when you look at it through Google earth. People have a better chance to plan out any "activity". The Virginia Tech Incident has opened the eyes of many and safety has become a very important factor in our lives. So as the professor pointed this out, I realized that a clear visual view of our college is not safe. I personally feel the college tries its best to keep the campus safe.

Lovin' the break

So spring break's been pretty cool so far. This past weekend I went to visit my best friend, Michaela, at Holy Cross College. She's my closest friend so to go see her was the perfect way to start off the break. We had the best time ever, I met all her great friends who were all so nice and welcomed me right into their group. We went out both Friday and Saturday night and had two insane nights of fun, then hung out and caught up all day Saturday and Sunday. I hated to leave Monday morning but spent most of the day in Manhattan with my other close friend, Anne, who is on break now too. Currently I have landed in Washington, D.C. on a family vacation and it is simply beautiful. Now I'm looking forward to summer vacation so I can do this stuff all day. :) Here's to spring break!

Midterm III, the Perfect Institution

The perfect institution should suit every student's needs. Even in small universities or colleges, this is almost impossible, not to mention big institutions such as Stony Brook University. The best solution I can think of is for schools to recruit more employees, and more importantly, students themselves should start to take initiatives. They are the ones who are really in charge of their destinies. The instructors, faculty and staff should offer more opportunities, such as internships and projects, to students, who on the other hand should actively seek those chances and ready to take them. Such emphasis on both ends of the academic instition will increase student's exposure to the real world.

ICON

So i had to blog about this because i have to work i stay a bit longer on campus than i was used to and i was lucky enough to catch ICON aka the International Convention Of Nerds. For about three days people pay to convene together dressed in their favorite character as they buy merchandise, see the stars o their favorite shows, and meet other people that are just as loco about LOTR and Star Wars as they are. For someone who is not particularly into these things it was interesting to see my entire campus transformed. its truly a different culture there are rooms so the can battle both virtually and live...i might have caught the live one on tape...ill post it after this blog. This would be interesting to talk aboutin class

Midterm Day

Midterm Day was very interesting, there were several different groups there each showing different aspects of life in their own unique way. my group attempted to show and overlap eye candy and then compare it to that of something natural like child birth. the idea was to see how the machine acts to the abstract feel of the eye candy compared to the smooth continuous natural feel of a home video. There was also another group that looked at the images of women that are portrayed in the media, she played a spoof found on you-tube where a women over-exaggerates a women traditional roles in attempt to ridicule it. there was also another group that had a band play above their video with contained various clips including eyecandy and textures of time. Over all it was a good midterm.

Midterm Day! p4 (analysis

This midterm day was cool. The coolest midterm I ever had for the last 5 years. We were watchin flips! We were shining projections on the wall and on the white cloth... I loved how you can see the images on the cloth differently if we held the cloth differently. Of course my job was to hold the cloth straight with that stranger that I have never seen in my life! But it was still cool. It was also very cold!
It was also neat when professor Baldwin pointed the projector at the corner of the wall when it was still somewhat bright outside. We thought we werent going to be able to see the projection but the shadow in the corner of the building was plenty of shade to see the projection clearly. however, as the night came in and the sun went down, the clarity of the image became much better. Hopefully we get to do this again! whether it be a midterm or not. If we do this again though, I would hope to have more work to shine and for the temperature to be higher so that we arent going to be freezing

Midterm post.

We had our midterm last Wednesday evening outside the Staller Center of Arts and Music. We experienced some movements by Matt which was cool. We also got a chance to observe the projects of the laptop with some of our work on it. It was nice to see the change in the visibility of the projection as the day went on and the sun went down. During sunset, the outside brightness gets dimmer and dimmer so we analyzed the projection of our video work get clearer and clearer.
We also saw that if we stretched out the weird cloth, the picture became clearer rather than when the cloth was wrinkled against the wall. by 7:30 the picture was almost entirely clear, whether we used the cloth or shined it against the building. It was cool to see the weird effects of the projection while distorted against the wall or if the cloth was stretched in a weird way.

Spring Break in Stony Brook

I'm here at Stony Brook working only from Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon but it feels like I have been here for a week. I could hear a pin drop in my hallway that is how quiet it is. I am almost scared at night becauase of the little weird sounds I could hear probably coming from all the way down the hallway. The people I know who is staying the whole week willingly I do not know how they could do it. The campus is too dead to stay here the whole time. But some people like the quietness I guess and probably can't get that at home. So if that is the case then fine you get a pass to stay.

Max msp

This program is really fun to play around with and I enjoy it but I just wish I could get it on my computer. I have a PC so that is the first isssue but I know some people in the class got it to work on their laptops. When I look for it online I cannot find the free trial. All the websites I go to has a dollar amount next to the download and it is making me upset. For anyone who has it on their PC can you tell me where did you download from if you remember. Thanks in advance

Frustration

Have you ever been excited to do something? Something you look forward to all week. You make plans and build you enthusiasm and then as the time for it approaches you find out it is no longer going to happen. What do you do? Speak about frustration. I hate the fact that every time I get ready and I set my mind to doing one thing, something else pops up and makes it impossible for me to finish what I set myself to doing. This even worse when it happens more than once. What is one to do in such a time? Then to make myself feel better I give myself little hope by telling myself to give it time and that maybe somehow, somewhere, the situation will fix itself and everything will fall into place. After that fails to happen, my frustration level increases at the fact that this obstacle is impossible to get through.
