Villainy

So I'm watching television for lack of will to do much else and Doctor Jonathan Crane - aka Scarecrow- finally shows up on screen. I find myself noticeably more interested in the program and even catch myself sitting through the commercials all to see a villain I've seen before be defeated the same exact way he was the last time I saw the movie. Why? Scarecrow, that's why.

It's nothing new. I've always had an affinity for the 'bad guy'. I realize it sounds weird, but it's not all that uncommon. Everyone is interested in the bad as the good, as they can't coexist or exist without each other. We're seated on the sideline of every conflict, and though it's more often than not a battle won by good, we still watch. Why? To see how dastardly the bad guy can be? To see how the good guy could outsmart the bad guy? Secretly hoping that, for once, the hero would foul up and the villain would triumph?

Or course, I understand it's all a matter of perspective - it's by no means a black and white situation. I just tend to prefer things a little darker shade of grey.
