Escaping Technology

Today in class we talked about technology and the different forms of social media. How would our lives be different if we tried to escape these technologies that we are so addicted to and reliant upon? We also talked about taking a break from “Facebook stalking” and the internet by instead going outside and just enjoying the “real world.” I will admit that ever since I bought my laptop, I have been attached to it on some days for hours. I check out my favorite websites, find new music, catch up on episodes of my favorite television shows, etc. I would like to escape from all of this though and just take a break. Now that it is winter, I find myself holed up in my room, in school, or work for hours at a time because I don’t want to go outside and stay in the cold (although if it’s snowing, I will gladly spend my time outside). Springtime will be arriving shortly and I want to spend more time outside away from the computer; away from technology. This is going to be difficult, however, because technology and new forms of it surrounds us on a daily basis whether we like it or not. I want to enjoy taking advantage of the nice weather by going to the beach, taking a long walk, or playing soccer instead of wasting hours of the day Facebook stalking. Before Facebook, Twitter, ipods, cell phones, and any other forms of this type of technology was invented, I think society spent more time interacting with others in person frequently. We wouldn’t have to worry about updating our statuses on Facebook or Twitter every few minutes to let the world know what we were doing – we just went outside and did it. I’m not saying these new forms of technology are bad or harming us, but I do want to take a break from it all and just enjoy life in the real world without it for a little bit.
