I went on a ski mountain for the first time at almost 23 years old. It was a great experience, but a bit scary. I decided to try snowblades since they are quick to learn and we would only have two days to spend on the slopes. There were plenty of very young children on snowboard’s, ski’s and snowblades making my fear seem almost amusing. Going down the first circle “bunny” trail I went straight down since I did not know how to stop. It was fun and amusing. The next slope was a square and seemed much more difficult. There were steep slopes and it seemed to go straight down.
I slowly learned to turn and reduce my speed going down the slope, falling several times. My boyfriend Joe was luckily there teaching me very patiently how to go down the hill. It was frustrating to be learning something new and watching so many others, especially young children, seem to do it so easily. He dealt with me slowly learning and getting frustrated and yelling at him while I was trying to learn and he just trying to teach me. We then took a break and relaxed with some food and a few drinks. This helped me to relax and the final slope was another circle and by this time I had figured out how to slow and somewhat control my speed. The following day I spent entirely on “bunny” slopes and did much better. I made it down a little slower than everyone else, but I did make it down!
Learning to snowblade was a fun experience. I not only learned to snowblade, but also realized that if I am just more patient and relaxed it would come easier. Going down the second trail I kept getting frustrated with it and almost giving up. It was a great time and I can’t wait until I go again. Maybe after a few more times Joe will be able to teach me to snowboard or ski.
