Materialism in the US and Europe

Coming for Europe, specifically the UK it is interesting to note the differences between the differing reasons. One particular area that strikes you immediately is the materialism that is far more rife in the US than in Europe. While we see many small cars on the road in Europe and relatively reserved entertainment systems etc, in the US it seems having the latest wide screen HD TV is not a special thing but merely the norm.
It is interesting to therefore consider why this is the case and what is the motivation behind this. In our discussions about materialism Vs Vitalism it clear to me that there has be a move resulting in the vast majority feeling it is of great importance to be “in” with the latest trends in the United States, is Europe behind or ahead in this regard?
