My beautiful family

Put more work into this one.
Thursday it rains and washes away all the snow. Friday, another snow storm and it is all back again. Instead of wining about the snow and locking myself in my room, I decided to go out and make the best of it. My friends and I built a igloo out of the snow. It was awesome, we carved out seats and lined them with garbage bags and we used a branch that fell down as the roof.

It stayed fairly well intact over the weekend. Today one of the sides caved in a bit, so I don't think that I will go inside it anymore in fear that the "roof" will fall on my head.

Family Museum

I tried adding a second level to the museum and a roof but whenever I try to do it nothing seems to align properly. I'm going to keep working on it but here is my museum:

Family show

This is my family gimped in a little show with some music from garageband. First try soo lets see how it works out.

Anyway I tried to make it short soo check it out. Wow the video quality came out poor, hopefully it gets better.

I swear to God if you crash on me again Sketchup-

Salvaged this.
Joy.

15 pounds of muscle

Soo I love body building. I starting seriously doing it when I turned like 20. I starting lifting and have been addicted to it ever since. I like putting on weight and dropping weight. I like the feel of being sore or just trying new supplements to see what works well. I like seeing how much weight I can really put on. When I started lifting I was around 140 and now I am around 175ish. Soo my goal by the end of school is to put on another 15 pounds which is kinda hard to do without getting fat. 190lbs is my goal. Hopefully this pic will be like the before pic and then end of the school year will be after pic hopefully.

Everything is a machine

I don't feel like people realize but everything is a machine. When you go to the atm you are interacting with a machine. When you call up some service because something broke the first thing that happens is they ask you to press buttons because you talking to a machine. Now at new stores you do the checkout yourself and there is no cashiers just a machine. You can rent movies from a machine. You can buy food from a machine. There is always this idea that in like 100 years everything will just be machines but forget 100 years. Look at now. Look at how many times you end up interacting with machines now and not people. Its not that their is anything wrong with that but do people realize this. All these machines take the jobs of humans and them actually interacting with one another. It changes peoples need for social skills in a trade for computer skills. It makes it possible to go through life without talking to anyone but you can get anything you need through a computer or a machine without leaving the comfort of your home. Machines aren't something of the future. They are something of the present.

Fixation

I'll admit, I'm terribly fickle. I find myself immersed in one thing, totally and completely, for a good stretch of time. Then, one day, out of the blue, something else will catch my eye and the previous (for lack of a better word) obsession, is dropped in favor of the new one. I'll still like it, yes, and will still enjoy it, but it doesn't consume me like it once had.

I realize that this (as do may of my other posts) makes me sounds somewhat crazy. I'd be the first to agree with you. But I'd also disagree. Finding interest in things is normal behavior. An almost fanatic interest in things builds bonds, fosters thought, and in what is perhaps the most sane example, builds careers. How else would someone find the will to get up in the morning unless he or she is consumed by the sheer want of the object?

Happiness can only motivate so much.

formspring

Soo this what happened to one of my friends and I thought it went well with what we talk about in class. He was dating this girl for a few months. They got into an argument over some guy who supposedly said he cheated on her. ( he didn't but thats life) She wouldn't tell him who said it and the fight arose from there. The next day she posted this whole situation on formspring. It is where people can post problems and anyone can respond to them. This is so freaking stupid. The fact that any joe smo can be giving your g/f or b/f advice about their relationship when they have no perspective of who you are. The people who write are anonymous and not like your friends. At least if it was your friends I could understand but really just anybody. Its when the people on the internet know more about your relationship then you, is when there is a problem. This kind of relationship where people can dump you on face book letting everyone else in the world know either before you or at the same time. Formspring is just another stupid way of people ruining relationships over the internet.

A little idea that I had.

Potlatch

In the folder “18 Trans Media” as part of the class readings there is a Wikipedia definition and description of what a potlatch is. I found it interesting because it is interesting to see how other civilizations live. A potlatch is a big ceremony among indigenous people within North America. These ceremonies are usually for weddings, birth ceremonies, rites of passage, funerals, and to honor the dead. Hierarchical relations are an important part of these ceremonies. The host shows off their wealth by giving away the resources gathered for the event. This in return increases their social status.

Potlatching has actually been illegal in the United States since the late 19th century. It was made illegal because it was considered unproductive and dangerous to its participants. It was again made legal in 1934. It is interesting that it was ever made illegal because in the United States we are granted many freedoms and making something illegal for reasons of being unproductive or a risk of getting injured does not seem constitutional.

Mayan Women

In the folder “7 Media as Gendered” as part of the class readings there is an article called “Mayan women incantations”. I read this article and found it pretty interesting. In Tzotzil, a Mayan civilization in Chapas, Mexico, writing and painting are considered to be the same thing. The word for book and paper are also the same and as part of tradition women would pierce their tounge, let the blood drip onto paper, and then burn the paper as an offering to the gods.

Also, today women in Tzotzil write by weaving. They believe that they can read their looms. It also interesting that Mayan’s had books so long ago. They had books prior to invasion in the 16th century and sadly only 4 of those books remain. Many were destroyed by the Spanish in the 16th century. “Incantations of Mayan Women” is the title of the article because it is the first book that Mayan people have made. The book is a collection of writings of poetry from several Tzotzil women.

mock trial

I am in a mock trial regional competition this weekend, a lot of pressure...how to face pressure and still going through is really difficult, I feel I learned a lot through this competition, about the importance of confidence, respect, teamwork, etc. It is definitely worth it. Fake confidence if I am really shaking inside is really important. Most importantly in this digital age, I did something in a non-virtual world, and actually enjoyed it....in today's world, I feel how to deal with physical confrontation with other people is vital

SNOW

I had to shovel out my car today.. without a shovel!! ... Our dorm had 3 shovels for students to use, all which had meraciously disappeared. I cant believe ppl these days... really stealing a shovel ? And while i understand people are jerks... the my dorm building refuses to buy another shovel... HELLO?!?!?! dont punish us all. I dont know which is worse. The shovels have been missing for over a week now and we have to walk over in storm to another quad to find a shovel.. thanks SBU.

PS: I cant wait till spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Facebook Fan Pages

What’s with all of these fan pages on Facebook lately? Some of them are amusing but most of them are just pointless. Some of my friends are fans of 1000+ pages. Seriously? I don’t even have words for this. I’ll become fans of my favorite TV shows, music artists, or things that I genuinely like or enjoy, but I see people becoming fans of “ HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NO.” or " heeeeeeeey!(:" ..."hi" nvm i dont wanna talk anymore.” I just don’t understand. All of these fan pages as well as Mafia Wars and Farmville notifications and requests are clogging up my news feed. Facebook used to be a useful tool but now it feels like I’m in 2003 again using MySpace.

The roads are awful

Stony Brook really needs to fix all of the potholes on the way to the campus. I don’t know if the town fixes this problem or if anyone else does it, but I need to be able to drive to school without feeling like my car is going to break down and fall apart at any given moment. The roads are fine coming from Smithtown, but once I enter the St. James/Stony Brook border, the roads are all uneven and broken up. The good news is I only have to deal with this problem four days out of the week as I don’t have classes on Fridays.

Iceberg ahead!!!

Ok woke up this morning and did my usual before getting ready for training, eating my breakfast while looking at the news headlines online. Guess what I read, it might not interest you in the slightest but I thought it was quite interesting. An Iceberg, the size of Luxembourg, has broken off from a glacier in the Antarctic continent. This iceberg measures about 50miles by 25 and contains enough fresh water to supply a third of the world's population for a year! It broke away from the Mertz glacier which is south of Australia after it was rammed by another giant iceberg. Scientists are saying that this massive displacement of ice could impair the normal circulation of cold, dense water. This then normally supplies the deep ocean currents with oxygen. This could have serious implications for marine biology in the region as most of the life there will die!
So this all must be as a result of globing warming, right? The rising temperatures most be causing the icebergs to melt somewhat or causing more cracks to form which as a result causes things like this to happen!! This in turn will cause rising sea levels which as a result could cause flooding in low lying coastal areas. If this were to continue many coastal areas would not need to worry about flooding anymore because they would be completely submerged beneath the ocean! Looks like i'll be stuck in America for longer than expected as I might have no home to go back to in Ireland!!!! Scary!!

My car in 30 years

ramp gone wrong

oh nooo a crash

I want this

Home or Prison

College dorms I feel can go either way in...a prison cell or a second home. I'm at university at albany and these places look like prison cells. The campus itself does not make me enjoy it, but its the people that do. I'm sitting in my girlfriend's dorm as she is in class and this room actually feels like a second home. I've been in other dorms here and I feel like I've been held capture. I think people need to realize the material around them and that environment really changes the mood you are in. Taking a look outside...it's rainy no one is loving it so everyone is slightly depressed. Setting is a key and if your room, dorm, office, house, etc looks like death...I advise change.

damn you e-books

If I hear anymore talk of e-books I'm going to lose it! I can't stand hearing about it. Media and companies are talking about it and personally I've never experienced e-booking or whatever it's called. I think it's going to be another product that sucks us away from the real world and glue us back into a computer. Personally I feel reading on a computer hurts my eyes more than a regular book. I feel if I go into e-books I'd forget what and how a library is. I love technology and all its glory, but I do love my eyesight more.

oh homework

It's weird to that I much rather do homework then just read a textbook or article. I think physically doing something and working towards a goal is a lot more rewarding then reading something and going "oh...okay I read it...done." You think you know what you read, but you have no idea. I think reading should be done for interest or it won't stick. I think having people read and do some kinda homework off of it will encourage people to actually read and feel like they have achieved something. I won't lie... I can get lazy and not want to do what I'm suggesting, but in the long run I see it being very beneficial.

survey response.. so far

The are responses I have recieved so far.... please take the survey too!

Irish Weather

I can sum up Irish weather with one word, WET! Typical Irish weather is rain, rain and more rain. Ireland is now nearly worse than what it ever was before. Over the last 5months we have received the worst flooding in 80yrs!! County Tipperary, where I'm from, and other areas around the south of Ireland are worst effected. Towns are flooded with rivers bursting there banks. Like my brother told me there was up to 5feet of water flowing through the streets and shops. Fields are converted into rivers as they disappear under the few feet of water. People like my brother, who is a farmer, are badly effected as there is serious damage done to land and crops. Floods have done widespread damage to hay and silage which is needed to feed the animals.
The flooding has also caused destruction to homes and people are becoming isolated in their homes. This isolation is caused by villages being marooned off. It is just awful. It is time the government started investing more money in infrastructure to deal with these disastrous weather conditions. For example they should invest in large artificial lakes that can store the floods of water from the storms. I know the new elected Chairman of OPW, Office of Public Works. She told me how in 2008 OPW only spent 82% of its flood relief budget. As a result the government intends to cut this budget!! They have no intention of investing in any flood prevention infrastructure. They can't even sort the economic crisis i really doubt they will be able to sort the environmental crisis. Once again it will be the people who will have to come together to try and pay for the damage that will be done.

Just a Fantastic Day

The morning began with me waking up 10 minutes early, not big deal. Took a quicker shower, walked out my door, and saw the pouring rain coming from the sky relentlessly. All I could think was what a great commute this is gonna be. Well it was far from great, having to go around three accidents on Sunrise Highway alone and one more one Nicholls road. When finally getting to south parking lot, I waited for 5 buses before it was my turn to get on which was twenty five exact minutes of standing out in the pouring rain, and im lucky my laptop still even works because it was soaked as well. And to make things better, on the busride over I realized i had locked my keys in my car and still have another test to take and to find out how to get into my car. What a beautiful day this is coming out to be.
